A little bit of history -
The “big” little town of Protection was established in 1884.  It is located on the High Plains of Comanche County in southwestern Kansas.  This area of the High Plains was once called “Satanta Valley”, named for the Kiowa Indian leader, and was a buffalo hunting ground.  Protection is surrounded by water - Kiowa Creek to the east, Bluff Creek just west of town, and the Cimarron River flows thru Collier Flats, a valley to the south.  Often, these three water boundries reportedly prevented prairie fires, and the safety during Indian scares offered by a small fort northwest of town, was the basis of stories behind the unusual name of ’Protection’.  In reality, the origin of Protection’s name was most likely linked to a protective tariff issue often discussed in the 1884 presidential campaign.

Folks living in Protection have ’spunk’ as evidenced by the many businesses started on a “shoestring”, built up, and with many being passed on to future generations.  Besides currently being home to over 40 places of business, the rolling hills surrounding Protection produce wheat, alfalfa, milo, corn, and cattle. Fields of native grasses scattered throughout the area sustain deer, native birds, and other wildlife. Oil and gas wells also dot the countryside.

Welcome to Protection!
